In truth we are not the human body. Our true identity is soul and to own this identity is the purpose of spiritual evolution. Self and God Realization are the goals of spiritual practice. The divine soul that resides in each person cannot extricate itself or identify itself under normal, mundane conditions nor can one obtain self realization or god realization while one is under the influences of the mundane mind.
The mundane mind is seduced by the five physical senses and the pleasures and desires that rule the material world. People often substitute the pleasure principle for spiritual bliss. The mind gets trapped by the desires of the physical senses, and in turn traps Soul with its desires and justifications. Therefore the first step in soul’s divine journey of spiritual development is self realization.
Soul is first allowed to emerge via self realization. This is best described as the process of freeing the Attention from the influences of the mind (the mundane mind seduced by the five senses). The subconscious and unconscious, filled with residue from previous incarnations, as well as residue from childhood, and endless karmic conditions from this and past lives, bury the soul beneath a wall of white noise. In order to transcend to self realization the spiritual student must rise above the material and mental worlds.
The human soul is God’s treasury, out of which he coins unspeakable riches ~ Henry Ward Beecher
The first three planes in the lower worlds – the physical, astral, and causal or mental, are all dominated and ruled by the mind. Soul must free itself by removing attention from the mundane conscious mind, then free attention of the subconscious mind from the astral worlds, and finally free attention of the unconscious mind from the causal or mental plane. This is done by focusing on the third eye, and typically with the help of a teacher.
Most spiritual paths do not ascend higher than the fourth chakra (the heart), while most of humankind sits in the second chakra (reproductive center).
The majority of religions aim for heavenly paradise in the astral plane, the first level of heaven out of the eight realms. The physical realm and the nine heavenly realms are reflected in miniature form in the framework of the human body via the material, astral, causal or mental, along with the six chakras. This means we humans can communicate with any part of the outlying universe by accessing our own inner universe.
The paths that teach us how to access the God, Goddess, Creator, Spirit or Soul within us are the ones that can help to liberate the soul from the constant entrapment by the mind that captures our attention to convince us the mundane world is reality.
Seekers should not be looking to vacate the mundane world, but rather to gather spiritual energies and use them to stay centered and to keep attention on the reality of Spirit rather than the chatter of the mundane world. As the soul grows, our dealings with Earth, and our relationships with others grow and improve as a natural outcome, rather than our having to memorize tricks or techniques which can sometimes serve to trap our attention and draw it away from soul and spirit.
The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs ~ James Allen
Self discipline then is simplified to remembering to place our attention on soul and spirit throughout the day and in all our affairs. Attachments start to naturally fall away. The mind will rebel, throwing one pleasure after another in front of us, substituting one short lived pleasure after another like drugs of choice. However, with persistence, the preference for serenity and joy start to outweigh the endless roller-coaster ride of seeing sensory satisfaction from outside sources. Like giving up refined sugar in your diet, at first it seems a deprivation, but after a while, the loss of mood swings, exhaustion and the growth of feeling good all day long win out. In fact, the taste of sugar eventually becomes repulsive compared to the subtle and complex tastes of fruits and other natural foods.
So, it is giving up the overcharged ‘earthly delights’ that overwhelm the senses and cause so many side effects – after a while, the profound happiness that can be found in spirit outweighs the desire for meaningless pleasure seeking that so many are addicted to.
Salvation is not meant to be a reward in the afterlife, but rather as an ideal to attain now, to alter and improve the quality of this incarnation. Abstinence is not the answer – as that is simply the other side of the coin of desire. Detachment frees us, and moderation becomes the norm as the desires of the senses loses its power over us and the indwelling life of the soul becomes more desirable and real to us through practice.
