In 1996, my husband and I moved to an isolated piece of land. Our goal was eco-sustainability. Therefore, we ate no meat. Domestic animals typically use up to twenty times the natural resources to give humans the same amount of nourishment as having humans eat grains, fruits, and vegetables in their natural form (before being eaten by a domestic animal).
We both noted how much of what we had read about being a vegetarian was true for us; we felt mentally and physically great on a meat-free diet.
Oddly, we had one major surprise. In the minds of wild animals, we were no longer predators! If we were sitting outside, wild rabbits, birds of all types, and even domestic horses would walk right up next to us. We could feed rabbits inches away from us.
To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear ~ Buddha
We realized that in the same way that nicotine smell of a heavy smoker oozes out of their skin, the smell of a meat-eater does the identical thing. That rancid meat odor normally kept wild rabbits far away from people, but not so for us now. We humans were instead fellow vegetarians with the wild creatures. Therefore, we were nothing to fear.
In the process of becoming eco-sustainable the question of the excess use of water in our bathroom was addressed. During the long and involved research into dry composting toilets, we learned once again that the closer to natural foods that a person ate, the fewer toxins had to be processed by whatever waste removal system was put into place. We verified that our waste would be more easy to safely remove.
The study of the digestive system of animals teaches us that animals with ripping fangs are typically meat eaters and those with flat teeth normally grind grain. Also the fast runners, like the cheetah, are animal-chasers and the sloth eats slower moving food: plants. That means that in general, humans are meant to eat objects not rapidly running away, like fruits, veggies, and grains.
A healthy body is a guest-chamber for the soul; a sick body is a prison ~ Francis Bacon
Parents are often worried about the results of a child ingesting massive amounts of candy, soda, potato chips and other junk food. Parents are also becoming more concerned about the high-fat diets of hamburgers, French fries, and milk shakes. In both cases, nutrition may be compromised but there are plenty of calories! We are also concerned about over medicating our kids. A young person may not be able to concentrate in school due to preservatives and the use of prescription drugs.
My field is special education, so I know how food can affect blood sugar and mood. The dangers of unverified food allergies, excess preservatives, and mind-altering medications have been reported numerous times. These unnatural products often affect the ability to think clearly and lower academic outcomes.
My personal solution is to eat as close to natural as possible, organic when it is available. Avoid all meat or dairy products, and trust that marketing-induced additives are not altering my supernatural abilities.
